Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional physical horror, but within Together exists a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story starts when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that come with most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
