Several professionals stated the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing cost of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Implementation
Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be marketed or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some content creators try to circumvent the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but promotion and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer laws, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or imprisonment.
Service Reaction and Content Removal
According to TikTok, the service has taken down violative material and prohibited related keywords and query recommendations. The company said it was committed to keeping the service safe and allocating resources in enhancing compliance measures.
Online Marketplace Operations
Investigations also found communities with up to 9,000 members marketing retatrutide using the platform's built-in search feature, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with thousands of members, filled with images of slimming results, positive reviews and step-by-step instructions for mixing or administering at home.

Platform Moderation and Security Measures
A spokesperson for Telegram stated it regularly moderated harmful content on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Professional Warnings
“People are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind retatrutide is valid, these digital versions may not include what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in interest to current price rises for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are using online platforms. But counterfeit injections are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she said.
Her staff has previously encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Producer Statement
A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a company investigational product not yet authorized … may expose patients to potentially serious health risks”.
