Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
